6-Day Umbwe Route – A Direct and Challenging Kilimanjaro Trek

Arrival

Day 1:

Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp

The journey starts at the Umbwe Gate, where climbers register and prepare for the trek. From here, you’ll begin your hike through the rainforest and montane forest zones. The trail is steep right from the beginning, as you ascend up the ridge between two rivers. The dense forest provides some shade, and you’ll encounter lush vegetation and possibly some wildlife. After several hours of hiking, you’ll arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp for your first night on the mountain.

Day 2:

Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp

The second day continues with steep inclines. After leaving the cave camp, you’ll pass through dense moss-covered trees, gaining elevation as you make your way up to Barranco Camp. The route becomes slightly easier, and you’ll pass by some spectacular views of Kilimanjaro’s peak. By the end of the day, you’ll reach Barranco Camp, located in a stunning valley where you’ll have great views of the Barranco Wall—which you’ll tackle in the next stage.

Day 3:

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

This day is crucial for acclimatization. After breakfast, you’ll hike up the famous Barranco Wall, a rocky cliff that provides a non-technical but steep climb. The wall offers fantastic panoramic views of the Southern Ice Fields and the summit. Once over the wall, you’ll pass through alpine desert terrain before descending into Karanga Valley. Finally, you’ll ascend to Karanga Camp, a beautiful campsite that offers more opportunities for acclimatization.

Day 4:

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

The trail from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp is short but steep. It’s the final leg of the Southern Circuit, a journey around Kilimanjaro’s southern slopes that provides beautiful views of the summit. Barafu Camp is the staging area for your final push to the summit. Climbers rest here in preparation for the early morning ascent to Uhuru Peak the next day. It’s a good idea to take it easy today and hydrate well in anticipation of the demanding day ahead.

Day 5:

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

This is the summit day! You’ll begin the climb in the middle of the night, trekking in the dark to reach Uhuru Peak for sunrise. The climb is extremely challenging due to the high altitude and steep terrain. However, once you reach the summit, the views are breathtaking, and you’ll feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment. After taking in the views, you’ll begin the long descent down to Mweka Camp, where you’ll rest after an exhausting day.

• Elevation: 4,673 m to 5,895 m (Uhuru Peak) to 3,065 m (Mweka Camp)
• Distance: 5 km to Uhuru Peak; 12 km to Mweka Camp
• Hiking Time: 6-8 hours to Uhuru Peak; 4-6 hours to Mweka Camp
• Habitat: Arctic to Rain Forest

Day 6:

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

On the final day, you’ll descend from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate. The descent is relatively easy and takes you through dense rainforest where you might spot wildlife like monkeys and birds. Once you reach the gate, you’ll be awarded a summit certificate and can reflect on your incredible journey up Mount Kilimanjaro.
